Why tendu leaves are important?
Tendu (Indian Ebony) leaves are one of the most important NTFP species in central India. The leaves of Tendu are used for wrapping bidi (Indian smoking tobacco). An estimated 350000 tons of leaves worth US $2000 million, is collected annually throughout the forest of India.
In peak summers, when employment opportunities are scarce, collection of tendu leaves give local people a source of income. But, this is not its only claim to fame. Traditional medical practitioners use these tiny fruits to treat malaria, diarrhoea and dysentery.
Are tendu leaves good?
Tendu leaves, obtained from Tupra trees, are hailed as the finest quality leaves to wrap tobacco, to form beedis.
What is bidi made of?
Bidis are small, thin, hand-rolled cigarettes imported to the United States, primarily from India and other Southeast Asian countries. They comprise tobacco wrapped in a tendu or temburni leaf (plants native to Asia) and may be secured with a colorful string at one or both ends.
Is tendu a tobacco?
Manufacturers of herbal rolls claim that these, wrapped in tendu leaves, have no tobacco or nicotine and instead contain herbs such as basil, cinamon, cloves and turmeric. These rolls also come in fun flavours including chocolate and fruity.
Why tendu leaves are used in making bidi?
Tendu (Diospyros melanoxylon) leaves make excellent wrappers, and the success of the beedi is due, in part, to this leaf. The leaves are in abundance shortly after the tobacco crop is cured and so are ready to be used in beedi manufacture.
